Cle Elum River Salmon Viewing Opportunity Next Saturday

CLE ELUM—Biologist and educator Bob Tuck will offer a guided walk and presentation on the Cle Elum River’s Salmon Viewing Trail near Ronald, Wash., on Saturday, September 26, at 10:30 a.m. Tuck is director of the Yakima Basin Environmental Education Program, and gives colorful and informative descriptions of salmon life history and behavior.

In the North Cascades of Washington state, you will find a little piece of Bavaria in the form of a small tourist town called Leavenworth. A town that once thrived on timber and rail reinvented itself as a Bavarian village in the early 1960s when it faced extinction due to the Great Northern Railway Company rerouting its tracks away from Leavenworth. With the absence of the rail system, sawmills shut down and Leavenworth's economy collapsed.

Parks Climate Challenge: North Cascades 2009

This summer, 19 high school students from Chicago, DC, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle spent a month in the North Cascades. For many, it was their first time camping. They hiked to glaciers, swam with bull trout, dodged thunderstorms, taught fifth graders about CO2, and went canoeing for days. It was an opportunity to both connect with a national park and witness impacts of climate change. The group was provided with an audio recorder and two cameras to document this experience and tell their story.

Seattle, WA - President Obama has just declared September National Wilderness Month, and this weekend is the end of the traditional summer camping season in Washington.
