Draft General Management Plan Ready for Public Review

The Ross Lake National Recreation Area Draft General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement is ready for public review. “This plan will help the National Park Service meet the challenge to preserve Ross Lake National Recreation Area for our children’s children while, at the same time, helping people enjoy all that this special place has to offer,” said Chip Jenkins, Superintendent of the North Cascades National Park Complex.

“The thing that surprised me the most is how really connected I became to the North Cascades. How deeply I began to care about my surroundings being there for a whole month. It was all a new experience for me,” said Laura Humes, a 16 year old who lives in Seattle, Washington and took part in a month-long study program at North Cascades National Park last summer.

Public meetings set to take comments on Holden Mine Site proposed Cleanup Plan

Wenatchee, WA—The USDA Forest Service, US Environmental Protection Agency and Washington State Department of Ecology have published a plan for the cleanup of environmental contamination at the former Holden Mine Site, located near Holden Village about 50 miles north of the city of Chelan.

The cleanup involves an inactive underground metal mine and mine waste piles in the Railroad Creek valley in the Wenatchee National Forest.

Public meetings will be held to inform the public about the proposed cleanup and to receive comments about the cleanup plan.

Methow Valley Ranger District in Winthrop Open Weekends for Forest and Park Information

A new partnership between Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and North Cascades National Park is enabling the Methow Valley Ranger District (24 West Chewuch Road, Winthrop, 509-996-4000) to be open daily 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 26 through September 12. These additional hours will provide visitors with access to forest and park information and backcountry permits in Winthrop on weekends for the first time since the Methow Valley Visitor Center closed in 2007.
